About us

Our purpose

To improve the health and well-being of our customers and communities – we won't stop until health care is better for all.

Get to know Blue Cross NC

Since 1933, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) has been committed to making health care easier to navigate, more affordable and more accessible to all. Through our history, we’ve grown to better serve our members and meet North Carolina’s biggest health challenges.

4.3 million members

We have more than 4.3 million members, including 1.2 million served on behalf of other Blue Plans.1

Neighbors helping neighbors

Our NC-based operations and locations have a global reach. We serve all 50 states and nearly 200 countries and territories.2

Broad coverage for all your needs

Our PPO3 network includes 95% of medical doctors and 98% of all general acute-care hospitals4 in NC.

For people, not profits

As a fully taxed not-for-profit health insurance company, we serve our members, not shareholders.

Making an impact in our communities

At Blue Cross NC, we’re not just focused on serving our members. We’re also dedicated to giving back to the communities where we work and live.

Investing in the areas we serve

We invest in our local communities to support the overall health of all North Carolinians. We’ve secured millions of dollars for charitable causes, volunteered more than 129,000 hours and supported countless other causes dedicated to fighting hunger, homelessness and family hardship.

Deepening our NC commitment

Since being founded in 2000, the separate and independent Blue Cross NC Foundation has invested more than $200 million in organizations and communities across the state.5 Its mission to improve the health and well-being of everyone in North Carolina includes addressing food access, early childhood development, health inequities and much more.

Simplifying the insurance process

We feature 10 locations throughout North Carolina where you can get one-on-one help from an insurance specialist. Our locations offer plan enrollment support, health services, preventive care, fitness classes and much more. The best part is that there’s no cost for any of our services.

Get to know our people

We employ more than 5,000 people6 who are passionate about work that makes a difference.
